The wall above a toilet, or above the washing machine, is usually wasted. A metre and a half of bare space doing nothing, while towels, spare paper, detergent and baskets pile up wherever they land.

This frame stands over either one and puts that height to work. Legs either side, three shelves above, and the toilet or the machine sits underneath as before. In the bathroom, keep towels, spare rolls and toiletries within reach above the cistern. In the laundry, hold detergent and softener, a basket and the cleaning supplies over the machine. Nothing changes about how the toilet or the washer is used.

The frame is black metal with walnut-tone wood-look shelves, the same honest finish as our freestanding shelving unit, warm enough that a small bathroom or a utility laundry stops looking bare. Open on all sides, so everything stays in view and nothing gets lost behind a door.

It stands freely, no drilling and no wall fixing. One thing to check first: whatever it stands over has to fit under it. Measure the width and height of your toilet cistern, or your washing machine, before you order.
