The fruit at the bottom of a deep bowl is the fruit nobody eats. The pears go under the apples, the apples go under the bananas, and the bottom layer gets moved around rather than picked up.

This one is wide and shallow. 30cm across and 10cm deep, so the fruit sits out in a layer rather than a heap. The sides are open wire in a powder-coated matte black, so you can see what is left from across the room.

It weighs just under a kilogram, which is enough to stay put on the bench when you lift a piece out from the edge. Round, low, and plain enough to sit in the middle of a dining table between meals. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it off. Skip abrasive scourers so the powder coating stays even. Lift the fruit out and wipe the wires whenever something has split or leaked.

How much fruit does it hold?

The WarmyNest round wire fruit basket is 30cm across and 10cm deep, which is a wide, low shape rather than a deep well. The fruit sits out across the base and stays in reach, instead of stacking up with the bottom layer buried under whatever was bought after it.

What is it made of, and will the black finish mark?

Powder-coated metal wire in a matte black, one colour throughout with no gloss and no pattern. Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it off. Skip abrasive scourers, which are what take the evenness out of a powder coat.

Is it a fruit basket or a fruit bowl?

It is a bowl shape built in wire, so it answers to both. It is 30cm across, which is bench-sized rather than table-decoration sized, and only 10cm deep, so it is shallower than a ceramic fruit bowl of the same width. That shallowness is the point. Fruit sits in a layer you can see into.

Can I use it for anything other than fruit?

Yes. Bread rolls, onions and garlic, the things that live out of the fridge. Away from the kitchen it works by the door for keys, sunglasses and post. It is the same matte black as the WarmyNest pull-out spice rack, so the two read as one set on a bench.
