Wine glasses do not stack. Standing up, they take a whole shelf of cupboard height for a row of empty bowls, and the ones at the back come out needing a rinse first. Turned over, the rim carries the weight of the glass.

This hangs them under the shelf instead. Two flat bars screw against the underside, one at each end, and the rails run the 28cm between them. The glass goes up foot first, the stem sits in the channel, and the bowl hangs below.

Powder-coated steel in a matte black, one colour throughout, with countersunk holes at each end of both bars so the screw heads sit flush. It comes in three widths, one row of glasses through to three. All of them run the same 28cm back under the shelf and sit under 4cm below it. What it takes up is the dead air under a shelf, not the shelf.

One row holds three to four stemmed glasses, two rows six to eight, three rows nine to twelve. Under a kitchen shelf, inside a cupboard, or under the top of a bar cabinet, with the glasses in reach and off the bench. Depth is 28cm on all three, and the rack sits under 4cm below the shelf. The glasses hang below that, so measure the clear drop you have and allow for the height of your glasses as well.

Care Instructions

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it off. Skip abrasive scourers so the powder coating stays even. Take the glasses off before you wipe the rails, and check the mounting is still tight from time to time.

How many glasses does it hold?

That depends on the size you pick. One row takes three to four stemmed glasses, two rows six to eight, and three rows nine to twelve. How many you get also depends on the width of the feet, since it is the foot that sits on the rails and the feet are what run out of room first. Slide them in one at a time and take them out the same way.

How much room does it need under the shelf?

All three sizes are 28cm deep and the rack sits under 4cm below the shelf. The width is what changes: 14.5cm for one row, 27.3cm for two rows and 40.1cm for three. Measure the clear drop from the underside of your shelf down to whatever is beneath it, then allow the height of your glasses plus the rack. The 28cm is how far it runs back under the shelf, so check that depth too.

Which size should I get?

Measure the clear run under your shelf first, then work back from the glasses. One row needs 14.5cm of width and holds three to four, two rows need 27.3cm and hold six to eight, three rows need 40.1cm and hold nine to twelve. All three go back the same 28cm, so the depth is the same decision whichever you choose.

Will it take glasses other than wine glasses?

Anything with a stem and a foot hangs from it: wine glasses, champagne flutes, coupes and martini glasses. Tumblers and stemless wine glasses have no stem to sit in the channel and no foot to rest on the rails, so they will not hang.

What is it made of?

Powder-coated steel in a matte black, one colour throughout with no gloss and no pattern. Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it off, and skip abrasive scourers, which are what take the evenness out of a powder coat.
